FAQ

  • Can I use LicenseYourSong.com to create and send a license for my song in a YouTube video?

No. Not at this time. LicenseYourSong.com can create and send mechanical licenses to others who seek to release a song for distribution to music retail stores such as ITunes or Amazon MP3 and music services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Streaming and more. If someone would like to use a song in a video, the song owner would issue a synchronization (sync) license for its use in a video.

  • What is a License?

In music, a license is a formal document given by the copyright owner giving permission to someone to use their music in exchange for a royalty.

  • I AM NOT SIGNED TO A MUSIC PUBLISHER. CAN I STILL SEND A LICENSE FOR MY SONG?

As a song creator and copyright owner, anyone seeking to use your song must come to you to get permission. When you provide a license, you are giving permission to use your song. Licensing of songs is a function of a music publisher so in essence you are managing your own publishing since you are not signed to a music publisher to license songs for you.

  • What is a Mechanical License?

A mechanical license is a license given by song creators/owners/publishers usually to record labels giving them permission to release a song in the marketplace in exchange for a royalty. Song creators are given these rights through copyright law at the time the song is created and it is part of the song creator’s exclusive rights.

These exclusive rights gives the song copyright owner the right to do or authorize others (by giving permission) rights on behalf of their song. Two of the exclusive rights are given to record labels from song creators/copyright owners via a license to 1) reproduce (make copies) and 2) distribute your song. Record labels will then be able to manufacture (reproduce) and ‘distribute’ your song to multiple retail stores such as ITunes, AmazonMP3 and music services like Spotify, Apple Music and more. Record labels distributing a song without permission from the song copyright owner could be held in copyright infringement.

That is why it is very important that record labels or anyone releasing a song through their distributor should receive the proper license from the song copyright owner.

  • Does LicenseYourSong.com create other licenses than the mechanical licenses?

For now LicenseYourSong.com generates mechanical licenses only. We may offer other music licenses in the future.

  • What is the Mechanical Royalty Rate?

The mechanical royalty rate is regulated by the U.S. Copyright Act and it is set by the Copyright Royalty Judges. Currently the rate is $0.1240 for up to 5 minutes playing time or $0.0238 per minute playing time rounded up to the next minute for physical (i.e. CDs) and digital (i.e. downloads). Use our mechanical royalty calculator to calculate the mechanical royalty rate for your song:

  • MY SONG HAS CO-WRITERS. CAN I STILL CREATE A LICENSE?

Yes you can but only for the % of the song you own. Each songwriter (owner) will have to send a license to the recording label for the % that they own. The recording label should not release a song without having 100% permission from all the song owners.
